We are overjoyed to celebrate Malebo Modyela, who has graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Pretoria.
We first met Malebo in 2015 when she moved into the Bakhita Village home after the passing of her mother. Her young life had already been marked by profound hardship, yet even then, her determination shone through.

When Malebo arrived, she had no parents to care for her and was struggling with significant health challenges. She needed dental treatment and suffered from poor vision. Thanks to the generosity of many friends, Bakhita Charities was able to provide the medical care she required.
When she reached grade eight, we were able to offer her a full scholarship to attend St. Brendan’s. She excelled academically, graduated from high school, and went on to begin a teaching degree at the University of Pretoria. Along the way, she completed many hours of student teaching and continues to volunteer at a local primary school.

After completing her Bachelor’s degree, Malebo was invited to enter the University’s Honours (Master’s) Program. With one more year of study ahead, she is expected to receive offers from the Department of Education. Her field of study focuses on integrating technology into today’s classrooms—a skill that will shape the next generation of learners.
Last week, Malebo visited us at St. Brendan’s. Along with reconnecting with the people and places of her childhood, she spent time with our St. Brendan’s Bakhita learners, offering heartfelt wisdom on “Life After St. Brendan’s.” Her presence was a gift to everyone she met.

We look forward to assisting Malebo as she completes her advanced degree. She is not only an exceptional student—she is an exceptionally kind and caring young woman.
